Bishop Loras of Dubuque with help from Father Cretin and Father Mazzuchelli founded Loras college in 1839. They also started St. Raphael Seminary to educate young men for the priesthood. These institutions were the beginning of providing a higher education for the young men of this area, The college had many different names over the years, St. Raphael Seminary, Mt. St. Bernard, St. Joseph College, Dubuque College, and Columbia College, Finally adopting its present name Loras College in !939. Loras was a college for boys.
Loras is the oldest college in the state of Iowa. Loras stands on a land of 60 acres at the top of the highest bluff in Dubuque.
The college enrolled boys and girls in the fall of 1971. In 1973 the Learning of Arts and the Learning of Science programs were introduced. In 1975 the Level of Community Education was started.
Loras College has an excellent library. The Wahlert Memorial Library has a collection of about 440,000 items in the library today. The library is very important for the education at Loras. The library is an official document for the United States government and the state of Iowa.
