Mother Mary Xavier Termehr is the Foundress of Mount Saint Francis. The sisters of Saint Francis were forced out of Germany by Bismark in 1875. He forced out all Religious that were in Germany. First they went to Iowa City. After they had staffed some schools in Iowa City, Bishop John J. Hennessy asked them to come to Dubuque.

In 1879 the Franciscan sisters staffed  St. Mary's School in Dubuque while it was being built. Then in 1881 they staffed Sacred Heart in Dubuque. The Franciscan sisters also staffed Holy Ghost in Dubuque in 1897. In 1910 the Franciscan sisters staffed Holy Trinity. Finally in 1925 they staffed their own building Mount Saint Francis. Now in the year 2000 they are remodeling the building.
The  Mount Saint Francis building is big  and long. The front of the building has a semicircle the comes up by the stairs that lead to the door. This is probably used for someone  that lives in the building who is handicapped. This way they would not have to go as far.
The old St. Mary's School building is going to be used for  a home for abused children and battered women. The Franciscan sisters are to be in charge of this project.
