How is College Different?
Next Step Magazine wants you to know 5 major differences between high school and college:
1. You have to learn how to juggle. You won't have a study hall or a daily bell-controlled schedule like in high school, so you will need to set your own time and manage your own unique schedule. You may have hours open between classes, and you'll need to learn how to manage that time to get your work done. "College students spend only 12 to 16 hours each week sitting in class. So what do they do with the rest of their time? Homework and projects, extra-curricular activities...If you want that 4.0 GPA, plan to study at least two to three hours outside of class for each hour you spend in class."
2. You have to hold yourself accountable. There aren't tardies or bells in college (some professors lock the door at the start of class and don't let in students who are late). Some professors limit the number of absences your are allowed. You'll need to keep track of your own grade and progress through the semester. You'll need to keep track of deadlines and important upcoming dates, because there won't be constant reminders.
3. Get used to no...gym class. Most colleges don't require students to take physical education classes. Along with nobody monitoring you to eat 3 balanced meals a day, this can lead to sharp changes in your health and weight. Join intramural or club sports to meet new people and stay healthy. Also, make sure to balance the cafeteria meals with healthy options.
4. Get ready to explore. College allows for a more flexible class schedule. Take advantage of the options, and use the electives to explore different classes and career options.
5. Prepare to live with roommates. As with high school, social life is an important component of college...In addition to activities outside the classroom, college provides the opportunity to live with a roommate. Sharing a room can be a learning experience. You are in close quarters with someone and it makes roommates more conscious of their surroundings.
Paraphrased from The Next Step Magazine May/June 2010
It's normal to be nervous and scared as well as excited about the upcoming adventure of college. College campuses also have numerous resources available to you, because everybody handles the adjustment differently. Dorms have an RA (Resident Assistant) to help with the adjustment to resident life and dorm living. Universities have counseling centers that are well-equipped to deal with issues such as leaving home for the first time along with many other issues. If you want to talk about how to be prepared to make the adjustment, make an appointment with Ms. Buesing before the end of the school year or learn what resources are available at your college during orientation.

January 1---Seniors can file their FAFSA. Go to www.fafsa.gov to complete your FAFSA worksheet and begin gathering the necessary information. Money is distributed by need but on a first-come first-serve basis. File BEFORE March 1 for a better chance at your financial aid money. Last year, those who filed after May were not eligible, and those students who filed after March but before May only received half of what they were originally quoted.

GO CAREER CRUISING!
East Dubuque has access to CAREER CRUISING, a web based career exploration tool. Career Cruising uses an interest inventory and abilities questionnaire to narrow down a list of possible careers the student may enjoy and excel at. Each career is a link to more information about that career including a description, the educational path needed for that career, the career outlook, approximate pay scales, interviews with people in that career, schools that provide training for that career, and more. Students can create a portfolio within Career Cruising where they save any information they like and want to remember. Students can learn more about 2- and 4-year colleges, do side-by-side comparisons of schools and follow links to different schools' websites. Career Cruising also has a resume-builder component where any information that is entered is formatted into a resume. As long as East Dubuque has Career Cruising, a student will be able to access their account, and all information will be saved. In the journal section, students can write about their current interests and post-high school plans, and later in high school compare their answers to when they were younger.
Career Cruising is available wherever there is internet. Simply log on to www.careercruising.com and to access the site enter username: east, and password: dubuque. On the next screen, students create their own portfolio log in and password. It is recommended that they use their first name_last name. Some teachers are using Career Cruising in the classroom, and I also work with students individually through the program. Parents are welcome to log on and create their own username to do some exploring of their own.

Welcome to the East Dubuque High School Guidance Page!
What does an East Dubuque Guidance Counselor do?
My name is Wendy Buesing, and I'm the Guidance Counselor at East Dubuque High School. I moved to the East Dubuque area this year and have been enjoying my new surroundings. I come from a family of educators and feel that a student's education is so important no matter what they do when they graduate. I worked in the social service field prior to coming to East Dubuque and also in private practice doing family and adolescent counseling. I understand the challenges that come with being a teenager, and I enjoy working with students through these challenges.
As the Guidance Counselor, I serve the student population in the areas of Academic Advising, Career Counseling and Post-High School Planning and Social and Emotional Counseling. I follow the Developmental Model of School Counseling which strives to meet every students' needs across their years at East Dubuque High School. Students are self-referred, referred by teachers, or parents can share concerns with me that I follow up with such as family stresses, grief and loss, etc. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.
Academic Guidance...This refers to issues related to scheduling and helping students with organizational skills, study and test taking skills. I had the opportunity to meet with College Admissions Counselors from a number of Illinois Universities and learned that the number 1 concern they have about incoming freshman is the lack of ability (of many students, but not all) to advocate for their own needs. This led me to also begin working with students to increase their ability to articulate a problem they have and learn how to find help to have their needs met. This skill will be advantageous in their educational life, career, and personal life as well.
Career Counseling and Post High School Planning...When I meet with students in the first couple weeks of school, I always stress the importance of having a plan for their future. If we don't know where we want to be in 4 or 5 years, how will be know how to get there? Motivation is shown to increase when a student has an idea of where they want to be, because they know the kinds of things they need to do to meet those goals. This does not mean that a student needs to know what they want to be when they grow up, just that they can begin to visualize different options. I meet with students to talk about different careers that combine their interests and abilities. We will also soon begin utilizing a computerized program, called Career Cruising, that combines interest inventories and skills inventories to generate personalized career portfolios for each student. Students will be able to research careers along with the training required for those careers and educational institutions that offer those programs. They will be able to see interviews done with professionals in those fields, learn salary ranges and outlook statistics for the future of that career.
I also meet with students to research colleges and other post-high school options. We research the requirements for admission, programs offered at these colleges/institutions, locations, tuition and scholarships opportunities (see below for financial aid information), among other interests the student may have. Juniors and Seniors are able to miss a total of 2 days of school in order to visit colleges. A permission slip is available in the office and each teachers' signature is required in order for the absence to count as excused, and the student is responsible for the work they miss while they are on a college visit. Beginning in the Spring semester 2010, there will be an additional form that students will need to attach a business card from the admissions office and obtain a signature from someone in the admissions office of the college and turn this in upon their return to East Dubuque in order for the absence to be considered excused.
Social and Emotional Counseling...So often, I talk to students and realize that school is the last thing on their minds when they are at school. As a guidance counselor, students can talk to me about things that are going on in their personal lives, family lives, and social lives so they can focus on their responsibilities as students in the educational setting. I work with students on learning to problem solve through issues they may be facing and learning to cope more effectively with things they cannot change. Students can talk to me on their own; parents sometimes call and request that I check up with their son or daughter; and teachers may mention they notice a student "doesn't seem like him/her self today." I respect a student's right to confidentiality, however, if a student discloses that he or she plans to hurt him/herself or someone else, or that they know of someone who is being hurt or in danger, I am obligated to get the student help by alerting parents, appropriate school personnel, and/or an outside agency (for example, the police department or social service agency). There are also situations that arise in which a student would benefit from more extensive counseling than I am able to provide in my role as guidance counselor. In these cases, I may suggest outside counseling, and it is the family's decision if they choose to follow through using the family's insurance/funds.
What are the rules about confidentiality?
Privacy and confidentiality are essential to having an effective school counseling program. At East Dubuque High School, we understand the importance of the relationship between the school, students and parents, and every effort will be made to protect student privacy except under certain circumstances. Those circumstances generally include safety issues (harm to self and/or others), legal issues and professional responsibilities. If you have any questions about confidentiality, please contact Ms Buesing.

Illinois Student Assistance Commission
According to literature that is dispersed by ISAC, “The Illinois Student Assistance Commission is committed to helping students pay for their education beyond high school. ISAC is an agency of the State of Illinois that administers scholarships, grant, loan and prepaid tuition programs. We are a one-stop trusted source for college information…”
This is a link to the website for Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You may begin filling out the FAFSA on January 1 for the following school year, however, you may use the worksheet on the FAFSA website now to begin gathering the necessary information so you are prepared when you begin the actual application. You must apply for a PIN NUMBER which is required prior to filling out the FAFSA. It can be obtained now and takes 2 to 3 days to receive. The FAFSA combines your family income, assets, and family information to calculate your Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) and your family financial need, as well as determines eligibility for grant money, monetary awards, scholarships and loan programs.
This is a link to the College Board website where you can find coursework requirements for NCAA athletics and NCAA scholarships. You will also find minimum GPA requirements and ACT/SAT score requirements. According to the College Board website, "The NCAA is the governing body of many intercollegiate sports. Each college and university regulated by the NCAA has established rules on eligibility, recruiting, and financial aid, and falls into one of the three membership divisions (Divisions I, II, and III). Divisions are based on school size and the scope of their athletic programs and scholarships." Student athletes should register on the NCAA website during their Junior year of high school, as they need to be cleared by the Clearinghouse to be eligible for athletic scholarships.
