| Dear Parents, With the start of the school year and students settling into kindergarten, I wanted to share with you our classroom CHARACTER COUNTS! Plan. CHARACTER COUNTS! (CC!) is the nation's most widely used character-development framework that is based on The Six Pillars of Character that are referred to as "TRRFCC": Trustworthiness: honesty, integrity, promise-keeping, and loyalty Respect: courtesy, nonviolence, tolerance, and autonomy Responsibility: duty, accountability, pursuit of excellence, and self-restraint Fairness: openness, consistency, and impartiality Caring: kindness, compassion, and empathy Citizenship: civic values, lawfulness, and common good CC! is a framework that allows me to teach, enforce, advocate, and model The Six Pillars of Character daily by integrating them into the existing curriculum. Through CC!, students learn the importance to discern right from wrong and to accept a moral obligation to honor The Six Pillars of Character. I will expect The Six Pillars of Character to be demonstrated everyday. All students will start the day fresh being on green for good character. If a student has a situation that they are not showing good character, I will give them a verbal warning and discuss the situation with the student. If the situation continues, they will be asked to change to yellow. In a severe or repeated occurrence, a student may be asked to move to red. At the beginning of each week, students will receive a new CHARACTER COUNTS! sheet that has a circle, The Six Pillars of Character listed, a blank spot for comments, and a box for your initials each night. At the end of each day, students will color their circle (green, yellow, or red). If your child is on yellow or red, I will highlight the pillar(s) of character not being demonstrated and write a brief explanation. I ask that you initial every day so I know you have seen and discussed with your child their character. Please contact me if you have any questions regarding the CC! Plan or a situation your child may have at school at 815 747-3117 (ext. 3010) or kmiller.edschools@yahoo.com . If a students is placed on yellow, they may have 5 minutes of reflection time immediately following and 10 minutes if on red. If the reflection time is not conducive to the time, the student may serve their reflection time during recess. During reflection time, the student will reflect on his/her behavior and the student and I will discuss the situation and how to improve his/her behavior. In severe or repeated occurrences that are absolutely inappropriate, the child will have a different consequence due to their actions. It makes a positive difference in your child's character when they know school and home are in constant touch with each other. I strongly encourage you to teach, enforce, advocate, and model The Six Pillars of Character. Children need to realize that each pillar is important in every aspect of life and character does count everywhere! TRFCC'ly, Mrs. Miller |
